4g) Academic Accommodations & Accessibility
The CREATE Institute is committed to supporting equitable access to learning. We recognize that students bring different strengths, learning preferences, experiences, and ways of accessing learning.
Accessibility needs may be long-standing, newly identified, short-term, ongoing, or may change throughout a student’s program. Students may have a disability or disability-related need that affects how they access, process, participate in, or demonstrate learning. This may include areas such as learning and information processing, attention, memory, executive functioning, reading, writing, communication, hearing, auditory processing, or sensory access.
Students may also experience a temporary change in their ability to access learning following a significant loss or major change in their life. If something significant is affecting a student’s ability to participate in their learning, they are encouraged to reach out to discuss what support may be appropriate.
If you require academic accommodations or accessibility support, please follow these steps:
1. Self-Declaration & Request- Students are encouraged to complete the Academic Accommodation Request Form and submit it to Ouida Pihulyk, Director, at [email protected]
Students are welcome to share any documentation they have that may help us understand their accessibility needs. If documentation is not currently available, students are still encouraged to reach out and begin the accommodation process. Individual needs and next steps will be discussed as part of the accommodation process.
2. Review & Accessibility Meeting- Following review of the request, the Director will connect with the Director of Accommodations & Accessibility, Charlotte Plummer McKenzie, as appropriate. Charlotte will meet confidentially with the student to discuss their individual needs, strengths, learning preferences, and potential supports.
3. Supports & IAP- Supports are individualized to the student. Some students may require an Individualized Accommodation Plan (IAP), while others may receive appropriate support without a formal IAP. Supports may be short-term or ongoing and may be reviewed or updated as needs change.
4. Implementation & Confidentiality -Information necessary to implement approved accommodations or supports will be shared with the faculty or staff directly involved. Personal or medical information will be treated confidentially.
The CREATE Institute is committed to collaborating with students to reduce barriers, support academic success, and promote equitable access to learning while respecting each student’s dignity, privacy, and individual needs.
