4 e)  Student Attendance Policy

Class attendance is an important academic requirement. Our training depends upon the consistent presence and participation of students in the learning community.  We expect students to notify their teacher before class if they plan to be absent.

Student Policy on Lateness and Early Departure
Learning at CREATE takes place within a group and community framework. Arriving late to class or leaving early is disruptive both for the student in question and for the group as a whole.

If the student is more than half an hour late or leaves more than half an hour early, it will count as half of a missed class.  Two instances of lateness/early departure will therefore count for one missed class and will be taken into account when considering the number of absences.

Missed classes, and/or missed intensive courses or lectures:
1.)    If a student misses more than three evening class sessions per year, they will be required to complete make-up work designed and assigned at the Faculty’s discretion.
2.)    Students cannot miss more than half (1/2) a day of an Intensive course. If they do, they must retake the entire course in another year. The three Community Intensive courses (Community EXA and two Studio Intensives) have specific make- up requirements.
3.)    Yr. 3 students who miss one intensive course but are otherwise in good standing to graduate, may, with the approval of their instructor and consultation with the Director, undertake an equivalent training lasting at least 16 hours. They must also submit an essay (2-3 pages) reflecting on their experience in relation to the expressive arts. This paper must be submitted to their instructor along with a signed statement of completion from the facilitator of the training course, confirming the student’s full participation and the number of hours attended.
4.)    Any lectures that a student misses, which are mandated as part of their coursework, must be completed.
5.)    A maximum of seven (7) classes can be missed over the year. Excessive absences may result in the student being placed on probation, suspended from the program or possibly asked to repeat that year.
Make-up Work for Community Weekend Intensive and Studio Intensive
Academic Policy on Late assignments, Incompletion of assigned work
1.)    All course work will be assigned due dates by the Faculty.
2.)    Faculty at their discretion can offer extensions for up to 2 weeks
3.)    Emergency situations, Illness or extenuating circumstances that require longer extensions require a discussion/approval from the Director.

Please note that these policies are in place to ensure the successful completion of the program and maintain a consistent quality of education for all students. Failure to complete coursework each year may result in the student not being promoted to the following year.

Process for applying for extensions/discussions surrounding excessive lateness/missed classes or any other situation that may put the students course success  in jeopardy should be first addressed to the students’ core faculty.
If agreement cannot be reached matters can be taken to the Director [email protected] attention Ouida Pihulyk.  All correspondence should be cc’d to the Director of Administration [email protected] attention Pamela Rosales.
