Mission Statement
The Create Institute is a training institute in intermodal expressive arts therapy whose mission is to train expressive arts therapists who are self-reflective, self-aware, therapeutically proficient and highly sensitive to both verbal and non-verbal communication. The training we provide honours the essential connection between human imagination, the arts and life as a way of fostering growth and change.
We believe when we make art together, whether in the therapy office, the clinic or the community, something new emerges in the world. Through that creation, we invite other change to happen. At CREATE, we know that human experience and imagination search for expression in many ways. Accordingly, through the participation of internationally known artists and expressive arts therapists, students are exposed to various artistic modalities. At CREATE, we learn to enter a time and space through the arts where the old rules no longer apply and new solutions must be found. We learn to play there – staying open to surprises. When we leave, we hope to have new and artful ways to engage in our lives.
The CREATE Institute is intended to be inclusive of multiple viewpoints that reflect and honour individual and cultural differences. We expect students and faculty to be sensitive to diversity in all forms, including race, socioeconomic status, gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnic, religious and cultural background, language, ability. The philosophical underpinnings of the program emphasize multiplicity, diversity and the understanding of differences.
