Practicum
A major objective of The CREATE Institute program is to provide students with an opportunity to integrate an Expressive Arts Therapy component into their placement work. Students are encouraged to try and explore different populations and educational settings in the three-year training. These sites can be as diverse as treatment centres, hospice care centres, children’s daycare facilities, shelters, community centres, and educational settings, among others.
The practicum Coordinator will help and support students to find clinical and community settings to apply the ExAT principles learned at school.
CREATE students are required to work in at least one practicum setting from September to May. Although placements generally span the full school year (September to May), some sites are also available during the summer.
In the first year of the program, the practicum coordinator works with each student to find the right placement situation.
In the second and third years, students are encouraged to develop their own placements with assistance from the practicum coordinator. Through this process, students begin to learn about reaching out to the community, as well as presenting and articulating themselves as expressive arts therapists.
On most of these sites, students have the opportunity to work collaboratively with other helping professionals.
