Study Permit and Consular Assistance Citizenship and Residency Status
Before entering Canada
Before coming to Canada, students must ensure they have the right documents if they are not a Canadian resident or permanent resident of Canada:
Canadian citizen
A Canadian citizen is a person who was born in Canada or who has been granted Canadian citizenship, and will have one of the following documents:
Permanent resident
In Canada, a permanent resident is someone who is not a Canadian citizen but who intends to live in Canada on a permanent basis. Individuals with permanent resident status may enter, live, study, and work in Canada, and will have one of the following documents:
How to Apply for a Study Permit and/or TRV A student who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, must obtain a Study Permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) in order to live and study in Canada for more than six months. A study permit also allows a student to work on the campus where they are registered in full-time studies.

The issuance of a Study Permit and TRV (if required) can take several weeks (or in some cases, several months). Be diligent about the paperwork required and please verify the application processing time on the website of the visa office or on the CIC website.
Letter of introduction
Once a study permit application is accepted, students will receive a letter of introduction advising of the decision. In some cases, a TRV will also be included in the passport enclosed with this letter.

If you arrive in Toronto and do not have a place to stay, consult Traveler's Aid at the Toronto Airport to find temporary housing. You may also speak with the Airport Reception Service, operated by CBIE, if you are arriving during their period of operation. You can also contact the guest houses or hostels listed below in advance to reserve a room. Once you have a temporary place to live, you will be able to look for appropriate permanent housing.

Medical Insurance
All international students studying in Ontario must be covered by a health insurance plan. As an international student, you are not covered under the provincial health care plan, and must arrange for private health insurance coverage. Medical Insurance will cover the costs of services such as seeing a doctor, hospital stays and treatment, examinations and emergency services. Individuals without insurance requiring medical assistance can be responsible for thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses, so make sure you have coverage while abroad. You can choose to arrange for your own Medical Insurance coverage from home, or from any insurance provider. You must provide proof that you are covered with Health Insurance for the duration of your studies at The Create Institute.

The Create Institute director, administrative office and faculty work diligently to ensure the success of every student, in conjunction with all members of staff, faculty and management. The Create Institute staff support and encourage the academic, professional and personal development of the student body, advocating for the rights of students, and ensuring that students are aware of what their responsibilities are. Student Services supports students with care, dignity and respect as they pursue their educational goals.

Study Permit and Consular Assistance Citizenship and Residency Status

- Student Authorization / Study Permit: A prospective student who intends to study in Canada for longer than six months must obtain a 'Student Authorization' or 'Study Permit'. Depending on the country of your citizenship, you may also require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV, or 'entry visa') that will be placed on a page of a passport at the time the study permit application is approved. The TRV allows students to enter Canada, while the study permit allows students to study in Canada.
- Temporary Resident Visa (TRV): If a student intends to study in Canada for less than six months, the student may enter Canada as a visitor and a study permit is not required. However, depending on the country of citizenship, a Temporary Resident Visa might be required to obtain. Information on how to apply for a TRV can be found on the CIC website.
- Medical Exam: Medical examinations are not required based on the country of citizenship, but rather by the country or territory in which a student has resided or stayed temporarily for six or more consecutive months in the year immediately preceding the date they are entering Canada. Please refer to the CIC website for more information about medial exams.

- Passport: Students must have a valid passport and/or official government-issued identification. If a passport will be expiring during the first year of study, please renew it before applying for a study permit.(They cannot issue a Study Permit for a duration longer than the expiration date of a passport)
- Proof of custodianship (may be required for students under 19 years of age)
- Medical exam and criminal history if applicable
- Check on the CIC website for details before applying.
- Proof of funds: Students are required need to demonstrate that they can cover the cost of one year in Canada (including tuition and living expenses) by bringing a bank statement for the past four months, savings account passbook, bank draft, or other proof that indicates sufficient funds.
